Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents from the Laredo West Station assisted Webb County Sheriff’s deputies and the Medical Examiner’s office in locating a deceased subject on a local ranch.
The initial request for assistance came in on August 29, shortly before 11:00 a.m., when a worker with a local energy company notified Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents that he had found a deceased subject in the Espejo Ranch, near Catarina, Texas.
Laredo West Border Patrol agents responded to the location and secured the area while waiting for Webb County Sheriff’s deputies to arrive. Personnel from the Webb County Medical Examiner’s office also responded to take custody of the remains, and will attempt to positively identify the subject.
“While the primary mission of the U.S. Border Patrol is to prevent terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the United States, while also stopping the smuggling of humans, narcotics, and other contraband, our agents are often called upon to do so much more,” said Jason D. Owens, Acting Chief Patrol Agent of Laredo Sector. “Working in extreme temperatures and harsh terrain, the agents’ assistance in recovering this person represents the first step in the process of returning him to his family, helping bring much-needed closure to loved ones.”
To date, for Fiscal Year 2018, Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents have helped rescue 1101 people found in dangerous situations, primarily exposure to extreme temperatures and motor vehicle accidents. Agents have also helped recover 64 deceased subjects.
